We segment by body style only where our underlying vehicle-classification data is reliable (SUV, pickup, estate/wagon, coupe, van/minivan). Hatchback and saloon/sedan aren't split out separately yet because the source classification for those two categories isn't precise enough for us to stand behind a ranked list — they're still included in the Overall Top 10 above, just not broken out on their own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are hybrid or non-hybrid cars more fuel efficient?
Hybrids generally return the highest combined MPG figures on this list, since they can run on electric power alone at low speeds — see the Hybrid & Plug-in Hybrid section above for our top hybrid picks specifically. Several non-hybrid petrol cars with small, efficient engines also rank highly in the Overall Top 10; each car's powertrain type is shown in its own spec table.
Does real-world MPG match these figures?
These are official combined-cycle figures from manufacturer/EPA testing, not a guarantee of what you'll get. Real-world MPG is usually somewhat lower and depends on driving style, load, tyre pressure and terrain — see our MPG UK vs US EPA guide for more detail.
Why does this list only include 2020-onwards cars?
Newer engines generally benefit from more efficient technology, so restricting to recent model years gives a fairer, more relevant comparison for anyone shopping today.
How is this list ranked?
Purely by combined UK mpg figure, highest first, computed directly from the specification data on this site.
Why aren't hatchbacks and saloons/sedans broken out into their own sections?
Our underlying vehicle-classification data isn't precise enough for those two categories specifically to stand behind a dedicated ranked list — they're still included in the Overall Top 10, just not segmented on their own the way SUVs, estates, pickups, coupes and vans are.
